What was once known as the Children’s Discovery Center is now the home to the Family Learning Center. Tucked away in the heart of Lewes, you will find a quaint museum. Don’t be fooled by its footprint for this museum packs a punch. I was given a tour of the museum and new Family Learning Center by J. Marcos Salaverria, Director of Education.

Interactive Family Learning
The New Family Learning Center offers young learners the chance to dive into Lewes history though interactive exploration with their family. Stop by Thompson General Store and explore what were the goods and who was selling them from long ago. From the store you can move onto the history of the Lighthouses with a replica of the Cape Henlopen lighthouse and the lighthouse keepers' house. Children LOVE the pretend play area of the lighthouse keepers’ home. It’s fun to see what the kitchen might have looked like and make a make-believe meal with your family in this cozy spot.
Children can build their own ship and attempt to navigate a body of water with their goods at an interactive table. Beware, if you make a wrong choice with your ship building or selected goods you may end up shipwrecked!
Last but not least, is a large-scale boat that little ones can try to navigate via a simulator. This was one of my children’s favorite activities and the volunteer who helped our group was so informative and pleasant.
If you’re looking to check out the new renovations, stop by for one of the C.H.A.I.R (Children’s Historic Adventures in Reading) sessions where history comes ALIVE! C.H.A.I.R events are free for children with a $5 admission to the museum for adults. Registration is required as space is limited.
